- Subject: C++ = George Bush
- Dear Eric,
-
- You asked " Who called [C++] the George Bush language?"
-
- I did, and for reasons which, while true, are apparently increasingly dated
- (and hence misunderstood.
-
- Way, way back in 1988, when Bush was running against that short swarthy guy
- from Back East (you know — what's-his-name: the one with the over-sized tank
- helmet), Bush was the front-runner. As such, he had what was called the
- "inevitability factor:" people perceived that he was going to win, not
- because he was the best candidate, but because people perceived that he was
- going to win, not because he was the best candidate, but because people
- perceived that he was going to win, not because… (etc., ad infinitum).
-
- This is the parallel that I'm drawing. I would not even begin to consider C++
- to be a "kinder, gentler language" (that's Object Logo), and I certainly don't
- think it's worth having the supporters of C++ go to war over the rather crude
- and slippery (I dare not say "oiley") advantages of their language.
-
- With apologies for the latter analogy ;-), I remain
-
- Yours,
-
- James Plamondon
